Published in 2018 by Wellfleet Press, this book is a hefty hardcover collection of poems by the great 13th century poet, Rumi. My illustrations are digitally-created collages based on existing geometric patterns known in Islamic art and architecture. The publisher, working together with packager/designer Tandem Books, knew that they wanted to use these patterns, but didn’t like the stiffness and staleness of the stock imagery that was available. I presented several options to “humanize” the chosen stock images, which were geometrically striking but lacked texture and warmth. The publisher opted for a tissue-paper-collage effect, which does not appear to be digitally produced—but it is! The finished result has all the geometric precision of an ancient mosaic, but with the warmth of a handmade collage.
